Such an honor to have my work be such a prominent component of this amazing Madam Walker exhibit at the Indiana Historical Society. The fact that my sister Teresa will soon be portrating my grandmother Violet, who is also featured in this exhibit, is fate at work. Opens to the public tomorrow, Saturday, Sep. 21. 10am-5pm. Free (tomorrow!). #indianahistoricalsociety #blackhistory #madamwalker #madamcjwalker #blackart #drawing #portrait #wecatchthelight
This is "The Intimidation Squad". When somebody threatened not to pay what they owed United States of Mind, Undefeatable Beats, or any associated entities, these three goons would roll up on you at the most unexpected of places. I remember DJ Optimo breaking us off right there in the Kroger meat section.
I am excited to announce my first official visual art commission/exhibit with a museum. I have created 5 full body portraits for the Indiana Historical Society's "You Are There 1915: Madam C.J. Walker, Empowering Women. These works featuring portraits of Madam Walker and some of her team will be reproduced lifesize, cut out and displayed with first-person interactive audio stories that speak on Madam Walker's journey and the discrimination she was able to overcome to become the wealthiest self-made woman in America. The exhibit opens to the public September 21. I will be at the opening, it's free, so come on through! https://indianahistory.org/events/you-are-there-1915/
Kibibi saw my work in a coffeeshop and reached out that same day. She is from the Democratic Republic of Congo, and said she loved how my work captured African features. At first she asked me to do a portrait of her mother, but when she couldn't locate a picture, asked if I would draw her instead. Truth be told, I'd have done it for free. Kibibi is a senior scientist at a biotech company, an overwhelmingly white profession, living in an overwhelmingly white town. She also bought two other pieces off the wall. Did I ever tell you how much I love musical sculpture? I want to design them one day. This is at Tarkington park. Whenever I'm there and start to play, a group of kids will gather around and listen for however long I go. The instruments that were sitting dormant then have lines formed to play on them. 💜
