Photo by Ed Kashi @edkashi/@viiphoto | Two men walk together along the Lower Zaab River in the Zagros Mountains in the rebuilt village of Biree near Dohuk, Iraq on April 28, 2005. ⠀

Dohuk, located near the Tigris River, has long been known as a peaceful city in Iraq. Most of the population is Kurdish, having also become a home for Syrian Kurdish refugees since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011. The city rapidly urbanized in order to accommodate the increasing population, and is also home to Arabs, Assyrians, Armenians, and Chaldeans.
